Teamlab Supernature in Macau: Everything You Need to Know for Your Visit

Founded in 2001 in Japan, teamLab is an art collective that showcases their artwork and installations primarily through digital technology. Famous for their multi-sensory exhibitions in Tokyo, Osaka, Singapore and beyond, the 5000-square-meter art space in Macau (or Macao) features multimedia artworks that “aim to explore new perceptions of the world and the continuity between humans and nature”.

Wondering what to see at the teamLab exhibit in Hong Kong? Here is a quick overview so you know what to expect.

Where to stay in Hong Kong or Macau: You may want to check out TUVE (a small industrial-chic boutique hotel just next to Causeway Bay),  Little Tai Hang (a boutique hotel and serviced apartment complex tucked away from the hustle and bustle) or The Fleming (featuring Hong Kong-inspired décor and design in Wan Chai). Planning on staying overnight in Macau? I recommend staying at The Venetian Macau, a sprawling mega complex of shops, a spa, rooms and gambling floor, or Grand Hyatt Macau in the City of Dreams complex. We also highly recommend Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau in the city centre which is a modern resort with a stunning pool. You can also check out other highly rated hotels in Macau here!

The teamLab Macau installations

Entrance to teamLab Macau exhibit

As you walk in through the signature black cloth drapes, you will venture into an explosion of fluorescent floral displays strewn from floor to ceiling: the Valley of Flowers and People greet you as you step foot inside teamLab SuperNature in Macau.

The unique aspect of this is that the projections are not pre-recorded and simply played back on repeat, it is created by a computer program that continuously renders the work in real-time and changes as people interact with the artwork.

Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives at teamLab in Macau Asia

As part of this installation there is also the Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives II where flowers form animal shapes, and scatter into petals when they are touched.

Athletics Forest at Macau teamLab exhibit

The next major space at teamLab Macao is the Athletics Forest, an interactive space that is particularly suited to young visitors. First up, an ecosystem of brilliant and fluorescent flora and fauna jump off a piece of paper in the Inverted Globe Graffiti Nature – Red List and move around the walls and uneven terrain.

Sliding Through the Fruit Field at Macao teamLab

In this section there is also the ever-popular Sliding Through the Fruit Field installation and game. The huge ramp is covered with projected light fruit and balls – as you slide down and collide with the different coloured balls, the seeds will grow, sprout, bud, blossom and bear fruit. In order to take part you will need to remove your shoes and wear socks down the slide.

Nearby is the Multi-Jumping Universe which is essentially an in-ground trampoline zone allowing you to “birth” stars that grow with your jumps.

Hopscotch for Geniuses at teamLab in Macao

Kids (and adults) visiting teamLab in in Macau will also enjoy Hopscotch for Geniuses, a classic children’s game amped up using digital art. Participants hop on the circles, triangles, and squares in the water, and watch as fish, butterflies and birds come to life on the floors and walls.

Move onto Sketch Ocean, an installation that showcases people’s creations in the sprawling virtual sea. Here you can draw your own fish which is scanned and transformed into three-dimensional animations on the wall.

Expanding Three-Dimensional Existence in Transforming Space at Macau teamLab

As you navigate through teamLab SuperNature in Macau there are rooms leading to even more installations, such as the ball-filled room: Expanding Three-Dimensional Existence in Transforming Space. These levitating spheres fill the entire room and change colour as people move through or touch them.

Floating Flower Garden at teamLab exhibit in Macao

There are a number of exhibits which cost extra to visit at the teamLab SuperNature Macao, including “Floating Flower Garden: Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One” and “EN TEA HOUSE” – the add-on ticket costs 100 MOP (as of December 2024) and can be purchased at the on-site ticket booth. “Massless Clouds Between Sculpture and Life” is currently closed as far as I know.

My personal favourite room was one of the add-ons and not covered by the general entry ticket: the Floating Flower Garden, a mirrored room filled with hundreds of orchids dangling and gently bobbing up and down from the ceiling.

The space is mesmerizing and smells divine – I could have happily stayed here for the full hour, it is well worth purchasing the add-on ticket just to explore this garden!

En Tea House at teamLab in Macau

Enroute to the En Tea House are two (mostly black and white) installations centered around “spatial calligraphy” and brushstrokes. Once you arrive at the tea house you can order a cup of tea (cold and hot options available) and scoop of “Jade Green Tea” ice cream.

What’s special is the beautiful blooming flowers that are projected onto your cup of tea as you sip on it, and the tea branches that “grow” and expand around the green tea ice cream.

Infinite Crystal Universe at teamLab Macau exhibit

At the end of your Macau teamLab visit, the route culminates in the fairly iconic and ultra-recognizable The Infinite Crystal Universe where light points illuminate the path and change colours throughout your journey.

How to get to teamLab SuperNature in Macau

The Macau teamLab exhibit is being held in the Cotai Expo. The venue is connected to both The Venetian and The Parisian by internal walkways, however it’s not always a straightforward route given how sprawling the complex is – if you are unsure follow the signs or ask a member of staff.

Macau ferry ticket

Most international visitors travel to Macau via Hong Kong. You can take a bus or private door-to-door car from Macau to Hong Kong, but the easiest way is by ferry – they are fast, clean and frequent – they will get you to Macau in under an hour.

Cotai Jet ferry to Macau from Hong Kong

Ferries run every hour or so from the Macau ferry terminal in Sheung Wan (take MTR exit D) to either Taipa (where the teamLab exhibit is located), or Macau Outer Harbor/Macau Peninsula where the historic centre is located. Ferries also run between Macau and Hong Kong International Airport.

Once you have arrived in Macau follow the signs at the terminal to the hotel shuttle bus depot – the free buses run throughout the day to The Venetian, Parisian and Londoner – this will get you to the teamLab SuperNature show.

Click here to get your Hong Kong to Macau Outer Harbor (historic centre) tickets with Turbo Jet or click here for your Hong Kong to Taipa/Cotai ferry tickets! All you have to do is bring your voucher to the designated ticket pick-up counter in the Sheung Wan ferry terminal and select your ferry times.

Remember: Macau is a “Special Administrative Region” which means you will need to bring your passport/travel documents if you are traveling between Macau and Hong Kong. Do you need a visa to visit Macau? Click here to see if you hold a passport from a visa exempt country.

  • Head to the washroom before you enter, as you will need to get a re-entry stamp if you leave mid-way and want to go back in.

Is it worth visiting teamLab SuperNature in Macau?

Infinite Crystal Universe at teamLab in Macao

Yes! We were so impressed by the exhibit and would have stayed longer if we weren’t rushing to catch a ferry back to Hong Kong. And even though we visited over the weekend there wasn’t a huge crowd of people at teamLab in Macau. For example, we were the only two guests at the En Tea House, just sipping on our tea and enjoying the ice cream in peace.

Art installation at teamLab in Macau

In terms of pricing it is slightly more than say, the teamLab Borderless or Planets exhibits in Tokyo and ArtScience Museum in Singapore, but considering the crowd-free experience it was well worth the ticket price.

I also feel that the “add-on” entry ticket into “Floating Flower Garden: Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One” and “EN TEA HOUSE” is worth purchasing, they are incredibly memorable and astonishing.
